discontinuous permafrost
discontinuous permafrost is permafrost located, somewhat sporadically, across the subarctic. unlike arctic permafrost, which is more or less continuous across the arctic, discontinuous permafrost is located sporadically and exists due to soil conditions, geography, moisture content, amongst other factors. like permafrost, it is threatened by climate change and will impact the world in which we live.
several years ago, when working on a design project with a couple of close friends, we referred to a consultant’s thought process as permafrost. the conversation continued to digress, and the consultant was determined not to suffer from just permafrost, but rather from discontinuous permafrost, given the sporadic nature of their thoughts. thus, discontinuous permafrost became a reference to ones mental state.
this blog, then, represents the state of my discontinuous permafrost. it will cover topics ranging from the environment, to family, culture, politics, architecture. it is entirely possible that it could cover anything. the common element will be the perspective, of one living in the far north, by choice, and who cares deeply about the culture and environment that have formed here.
